Calvin Luo is an amazing designer, known best for his love of color and unique collections – Luo recently showed at Paris Fashion Week and it was a magnificent display!
Calvin was inspired by “Elegies to the Spanish Republic,” a series of paintings with a contrast of harsh black strokes on a white canvas. Robert Motherwell, a New York painter who painted the series about the Spanish Civil War, intended the Elegies as his “private insistence that a terrible death happened that should not be forgotten”. Luo incorporated that into his collection of blacks and whites -with colors shining through. The hues give a glimmer of hope in a rather sorrowful situation.
The show features one model in various garments – I believe that this was meant to show how Luo’s garments are so versatile, even on the same model. I thoroughly enjoyed this show.
